Cognitive Factors Affecting Student Understanding of Geologic Time
J. Dodick, and N. Orion 2003 Journal of Research in Science Teaching 40(4), p415-442

This study presents an assessment of the Geologic Time Aptitude Test (GeoTAT), a model based on Montagnero’s model of diachronic thinking that investigates factors that affect how students reconstruct geological systems that develop over time. In the study, a sample of grade 7-12 students was subject to quantitative and qualitative examination including written questionnaires, structured interviews, and class observation. Test results are discussed in detail.
