Gender, Genre, and Writing Style in Formal Written Texts
S. Argamon, M. Koppel, J Fine, A.R. Shimoni 2003

This paper discusses a comparison of male and female writing styles in Modern English. Writing samples are from diverse genres of articles and books in the British National Corpus (BNC). Fully automated author gender determination methods were applied to unseen documents. Features that best facilitate document classification by author gender dominate discussion. It was found that significant gender-based differences in lexical and syntactic use were demonstrated in both fiction and non-fiction texts. This suggests a correlation between socialization (interaction styles) and linguistic use. Tables and figures illustrating text content are included.
