Between 1947 and 1952, Hooker Chemicals and Plastic Corporation buried thousands of tons of chemical waste in the Love Canal area of Niagara Falls, New York. By 1978, President Jimmy Carter had declared a federal emergency at the site, which had become a 15-acre residential neighborhood. This site provides background information, maps, photos and extensive documentation about the contamination of the area and the health effects suffered by residents, as well as the resultant litigation and cleanup.
