Learning Geologic Time in the Field

This article in the Journal of Geoscience Education describes a method used to teach the concept of geologic time to introductory geology students using an inquiry-based approach. Students work in teams to obtain rock samples that are used to interpret the geologic history of a region. For each rock, the report they write includes where and when it was found, a complete description, an explanation of how it formed, and a geologic history that explains how it fits into the regional history. This project can also be done using building stones.
