Jurassic and Cretaceous Outcrop Equivalents of Shaunavon, Lower Mannville, and Bow Island/Viking Reservoirs, North Central Montana
Karen Porter 1998 Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology Special Publication 113

The focus of this four-day field trip in southern Alberta and north-central Montana is the examination of outcrop sections of Middle Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous units that produce oil and gas in the subsurface of Montana and southern Canadian plains. Featured are the Upper Cretaceous Milk River Formation (Eagle Sandstone) at Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park near Chester, MT; the Lower Cretaceous Kootenai Formation (Aptian) and overlying Albian section in the Sweet Grass Hills, Little Rocky Mountains, and Bear Paw Mountains; and the Middle Jurassic Sawtooth (Shaunavon) Formation. The road log descriptions focuses on the sedimentology, vertical and lateral facies relationships, unconformities, regional stratigraphic framework, and reservoir characteristics of the units.
