Learning Geologic Time in the Field
Robert C. Thomas 2001 Journal of Geoscience Education v49 no1 p18-21

This inquiry-based project has each student go out and collect 3 rocks (1 igneous, 1 metamorphic, and 1 sedimentary) from a given area and to determine how they fit into that area's geologic history. For each rock, the report they write includes where and when it was found, a complete description, an explanation of how it formed, and a geologic history that explains how it fits into the regional history. This project can also be done using building stones.
