Option 1. Design a Watershed Plan

Using the resources introduced in this lesson, students will prepare and present a Best Management Practice (BMP) for an area of their own interest. This can be a park, schoolyard, shopping mall, construction site, neighborhood, local forest, or agricultural area.

Assignment: Design a Watershed Plan

Design a watershed plan for your schoolyard or another area of interest that maximizes the health of the watershed by implementing conservation BMP practices and land cover changes. Then, use Model My Watershed to experiment with different scenarios until you find the ones for your schoolyard or area of interest that lead to the lowest amounts of runoff and greatest amounts of infiltration while keeping in mind all of the current activities and uses of the land. Write a summary report on your findings, including screenshots from the run-off simulation and model my watershed, to explain your BMP selection.

Note: Visit this site Model My Watershed Help for technical help and information.
Time required: 1 class period to explore the program and test ideas, an additional class period to produce report.
