Thursday

8:30–9:00 Light breakfast is available

9:30-10:30 A Framework for Change: What is our vision of success? What change are we trying to accomplish?

  • Introduction of a vision followed by table discussion and whole group modification and adoption

10:30-10:45 Break

10:45-11:30 Featured speakers

Two 10-minute presentations by Toby Smith (AAU) and Bob Hilborn (AAPT) of programming related to vision of success. There will be time for questions of clarification/application and discussion of opportunities for collaboration.

Active listening questions:

  • What about these programs is of interest and transferable to my society?
  • What opportunities for collaboration are suggested by these programs?

11:30-12:30 Subgroup discussions

Subgroups share existing programming in these areas, synthesize where we are in workspace, and develop a set of opportunities for collaboration. ISSUES sub-groups (Microsoft Word 2007 (.docx) 77kB Jan28 14)

Subgroups will leave synthesis and ideas in the participant workspace so that others may read the synthesis over lunch

12:30–1:30 Lunch

Lunchtime assignment: Read the syntheses and ideas posted by each of the other groups.

1:30–2:15 Discussion of ideas generated by teams.

Each group will report one key synthetic idea and one idea for collaboration (2 minutes for each group).

Active listening questions:

  • What strategies are important to move forward together?
  • What are the topics for next round of discussions?

2:15–2:30 Form subgroups organized by similar societies for second round of sharing, synthesis, and idea generation

2:30–2:45 Break

2:45-4:00 Subgroup discussions

Subgroups share existing programming , synthesize where we are in workspace, and develop a set of opportunities for collaboration

Subgroups will leave synthesis and ideas in the participant workspace so that others may read the synthesis before Friday morning.

4:00–5:30 Where are we now? Initial work on summary and action items.

Time for individual reflection and recording (10 minutes):

  • Roadcheck

Discussion: What are we thinking as the most promising areas for collaboration?

5:30–6:30 Social hour

Friday

9:00–10:00 Review draft summary and priority areas for collaboration

10:00–11:30 David Asai (HHMI), Shirley Malcolm (AAAS), and Susan Singer (NSF) respond to our ideas. Discussion.

11:30–12:00 Finalize next steps. Workshop evaluation.
