Name: Mr. Jerry L. Price
Position and school: Earth-Space Science Teacher,
Environmental & Sustainable Science Teacher
Title of the EET Chapter on which you based your Project or Activity:
Protecting Wetlands from Exurban Development
Dataset(s) Used:
Valdosta
Tool Used:
MyWorld GIS
WebGIS site
Project/Activity Question(s):
• You will take on the role of land-use planner in Baker County, Florida. You will use My World GISTM tools in order to determine the best location for issuing a fifty-acre development permit. This site-based, problem-based case is situated near the town of Macclenny, in Baker County, Florida. This site was chosen because the area is undergoing urban sprawl (exurban development) from neighboring Jacksonville, Florida. This chapter provides the user with a model for learning how to conduct geographic information system (GIS) analysis on land-use, wetland, and political geography datasets. This chapter uses My World GIS for conducting the spatial analysis.
Project/Activity Goal(s):
• Navigate land-use, wetland, and political geography data using My World GIS;
• Use geospatial data to describe local land-use distribution;
• Use wetland classification data to identify wetland spatial distribution;
• Create buffers for roads and wetlands;
• Visualize the relationship between wetland location and exurban zoning; and
• Conduct spatial analysis in order to make informed decisions.
Brief Description of the Project/Activity (What did students do?):
• Learned how to launch and manipulate MyGIS
• Access the WebGIS site
• Download Valdosta data
• Important data & format it
• Formulate conclusions based on geo-spatial data
• Present finding and conclusions in a Powerpoint presentation
