« Investigation PlansFast Food Excel
Sixth grade students worked with the Physical Education and technology teacher to create a lesson using Excel. Physical Education teachers were interested in using technology in teaching their health unit. Students are working for 2 weeks on nutrition in health. The lesson is to have students use Excel to determine how much fat is in a fast food lunch.

Diane,
I found your instructions for using Excel to be complete. My students need direction because of little or no experience with Excel. I printed them out so I can modify for my lesson. I would like to make curriculum connections but teachers are not available for planning. How did you get together and plan the unit?

Diane:
You've given your students (and the PE teachers) a great tool for diet analysis. Perhaps we can all use it to combat American's propensity for obesity! It's great when technology complements a topic so well.
Nice work! smiles,
LuAnn

A great way to show kids what they are putting into thier bodies. I like how clear your instructions are. I'm thinking about how I could use this in my curriculum . . . maybe adding how different exercises burn calories? Thanks for a good idea. Would be interested in the kids reactions and thoughts about what they learned.

Hi Mary
The Phys.Ed teacher met only once with me, the rest was through email. We hope to meet again at the end of the school year to work on how the students would actually do some exercise to show how long it would take to burn the meal's calories. Our school offers us a technology Monday afterschool where we can meet in teams to connect.

This is a great plan. I immediately thought of my 10th grade bio class as we are finishing up the digestive system and will view "Super Size Me" as part of our wrap-up. I will be introducing my 8th graders to excel, and your instructions will be very helpful as I set up their assignment. Thanks.
