« Implementation DiscussionMeasuring Size of Crystals
I am obviously posting late, so I wanted to share another lesson that I did with the kids using ImageJ. I will post documents later. The kids did an experiment investing how the rate of cooling affects the size of the crystals formed. They used Epsom salt. Initially, I was going to have them just use a metric ruler, but then I remembered ImageJ. We took digital images, and using the scale and measurement tools, we measured the size of the crystals. Very easy and cool!

Hi MaryAnn. That sounds like a great activity. How did the kids do with the Digital Camera; had they had experience before?

Hi MaryAnn, Did you feel like the camera distorted the size at all? Johanna

Hi MaryAnn
Did the students take the digital photos and make the transfer to computers? Also, to follow up on Johanna's questions, how was the clarity of the images?

Hello Jody, Johanna and Diane,
I actually took the pictures for the kids, to avoid issues. I used the Macro setting, so the crystals were very clear. It was easy to see and measure the large crystals, but the fast cooling crystals were very small, making it difficult to measure. We put a ruler accross the petri dishes for scale. I will post the pictures as soon as I get back to school. We have a snow day today.
