Population Dynamics with Excel

Howdy,

So I haven't yet implemented my lesson yet for two reasons. One, been very busy, two, I want to use excel to have my students learn population dynamics, and my ecology unit will not start up for another two weeks or so. I have been in the process with discussing with Nick some possible resources for data sets. One of the ideas is to determine how certain species population sizes have changed as a result of the reintroduction of the wolf at Yellow Stone National Park. Depending on the availability of this data and the complexity of the results, I plan on implementing this(using excel to build a chart) in about 4 weeks.

Aaron:

Looking at an unstable system (one that has recently had a new species introduced) like Yellowstone sounds interesting. I'm hopeful that you can find good data.

Here's an interesting site on human populations in the US:
http://www.censusscope.org/index.html
Though it offers a lot of already-prepared maps and charts, it might be valuable in helping you introduce populations or it could be part of a culminating lesson. You can select and copy data from the tables they provide and paste them into Excel, in order to produce similar graphs or to show the info in new ways.

Let everyone know how your data search goes!

Good luck smiles,
LuAnn

Aaron,

If you are looking for good data and follow-up lessons think about the 50 years of study on Isle Royale (Lake Superior)
