HELP

I have modified my investigation plan to focus on erosion (which we'll be starting in a few weeks). My investigation will be around how the shoreline of Cape Cod has changed. Does anyone know where to get images from the past? Or how? I've been to the MASS GIS site and they have some great Coastal Color photos, but they are only of the present. Ideally, I wanted the students to do something similar to what we did with the aral sea to calculate the approximate rate of change. Any ideas?

Jody ... this is not exactly what you want but it may help you in your investigation. It came from the Boston Globe on or around December 17, 2006. It shows how Monomoy Point has changed.

Hi Jody,

I sent you this info in an email, but am posting it here in case others might find it useful.

The MassGIS site has a great database of shoreline change maps at:
www.mass.gov/czm/hazards/shoreline_change/shorelinechangeproject.htm

To access the maps and transect data, click on the Shoreline Change Browser.

These images have already been processed, and as near as I can tell, do not easily download. You could take some screen shots of the area you are interested in.
However, the old shorelines would already be drawn on the images.....not quite like the Aral sea.

You might send an email, identify yourself as a teacher, and explain that you are looking for a time series set of images for use with your students.
My suspicion, though, is that these images do not exist, since it seems the calculations come from several different sources.

Thanks,---Carla
