Step 1 –
Note: (2022) My World GIS is no longer available.

Displaying and Optimizing the ESI scores

1. Click on the Visualize mode button to switch My World into Visualize mode and click on the ISO Countries entry in the Layer List pane located on the left of your My World window to select this layer for further interaction. My World displays a highlighted border around the ISO Countries entry in the Layer List pane.

2. Click on the pulldown menu on the ISO Countries field to display all the available ESI attributes as a scrollable menu.

3. Scroll this menu to locate and select the ESI entry from this menu. My World will display the ESI values on the world map. [Screenshot]

Take a few minutes to examine the default ESI visualization. My World uses fill color to depict the relative ESI values for the different countries based on a gray color scheme. As a result, countries with higher ESI values are shown using a darker shade of gray. For instance, Canada displays a darker gray fill color than the US which in turn features a darker gray than Mexico. These fill colors correspond to the relative ESI values for this countries: Canada (70.6), US (53.2), and Mexico (45.9). My World shows a legend below the world map display illustrating the colors used for the different ESI values. Notice also that countries lacking ESI data are shown using a fill color different from the color scheme of choice – blue for the default gray color scheme. For example, Antarctica in the South Pole is shown in blue as it lacks ESI data in the 2002 ESI dataset.

To see the ESI score of a particular country, click on the Pointer Tool button [screenshot] and then on a country. An arrow will appear along the legend below the map showing that country's ESI score. For more information, click on the Get Information Tool [screenshot] and then on a country. A popup window will be displayed that shows all of the data for that country.

4. To configure the appearance of this visualization, click on the Edit Layer Appearance button [Iconshot] on the Toolbar to display the Edit Appearance of Layer “ISO Countries” window open to the Fill Color tab. [Screenshot]

5. Click on the Colorscheme: menu to display possible color schemes for visualization purposes.

Select the color scheme labeled Green.

6. Change the number 6 in the Number of fill colors: text field to 32 to aid visual differentiation between relatively close ESI values on the map display.

7. Click on the Apply button to configure your world map display. My World modifies the world map display on the main using the new fill color configuration for all countries.

8. Click on the Close button.
