Laurentide ice sheet map with jet stream and lakes

The growth of a large ice sheet in northern North America deflected the polar jet stream (shown with blue arrows) southward during glacial periods. Increased rainfall rates accompanied the relocated storm track, raising lake levels throughout the Great Basin.
