View Original Image at Full SizeFigure 4: Density differences between fresh and salt water cause the development of a "fresh water lens" below most islands. The fresh water, infiltrating from the surface, "floats" on the salt water, depressing the boundary (halocline) in the same way that a floating block of wood depresses the water surface it is floating on.
