color CL image of detrital quartz grains, quartz cement and a quartz in a fracature. This sample is from the Mt. Simon Fm. from northern Illinois. (color, 557 Kb) and includes an intergranular quartz-filled microfracture cutting across several well-rounded quartz grains. The black, euhedral shapes in the center of the microfracture are crystals of barite.
