Using Data in the Classroom Workshop 2007

AccessData Workshop, Marlborough, Massachusetts

When? Where?

The 2007 AccessData Workshop will be held May 20 through 23 at the Marlborough Conference Center, west of Boston, Massachusetts. The workshop will provide an opportunity for data representatives, software tool specialists, scientific researchers, curriculum developers, and educators to interact with one another in a variety of sessions, all working toward the common goal of facilitating the use of data in education.

Who?

We have identified and invited a range of data providers and analysis tool experts to participate in the meeting. Scientists, educational materials developers, and college- and high school-level educators who work with data in the Earth and environmental sciences are invited to identify themselves and register to participate.

What will happen during the workshop?

In addition to keynote presentations, hands-on lab sessions (Tool Time) and a poster session with the theme "Success Stories: Using Data in Education," attendees will be grouped into teams that include the full range of roles represented at the meeting. Team members will work together to develop an educational module, drawing upon the expertise of individuals in each role on the team. This practical exercise enables team members to learn from each other about the needs, practices, and expectations of the other groups.

Who will pay?

Lodging and meals will be provided for all accepted registrants. Some funding is also available for travel stipends; this will be awarded as necessary to ensure that all professional roles will be represented at the meeting. To minimize paperwork, all participants will be asked to pay for their own travel up front. At the workshop, participants will sign the appropriate form to request their travel stipend, and checks will be mailed to them within 30 days.

When should I arrange to arrive in and depart from Boston?

We anticipate that attendees will arrive in Boston in the mid-day to evening on Sunday, May 20. We will arrange for groups of attendees to ride together in vans from Logan airport to the Marlborough Conference Center (a drive of about 45 minutes).

The first event is an optional buffet dinner from 6 to 7:30 pm the evening of Sunday, May 20. The workshop officially begins at 8:30 am on Monday, May 21 and ends at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, May 23. We will arrange ground transportation from the Marlborough Conference Center to Logan airport, facilitating departures in the mid- to late afternoon of Wednesday, May 23.
