Traveling by air

You are responsible for your transportation to and from Bozeman. Fly into Bozeman, MT (BZN) via Delta, Northwest, United or Horizon Airlines. If you are not planning on attending pre- or post-meeting field trips, plan to arrive on Friday, September 16 no later than 5:00 PM (earlier if at all possible). (Adjust your travel schedule a day earlier or later if you plan to participate in the field trip(s). Vans will shuttle participants from the airport to campus for the opening dinner.

If you arrive earlier in the day, there are free shuttles to the hotels. MSU vans will stop at the hotels to bring participants to campus for the opening dinner.

For your return trip home, schedule your flight for Monday, September 19. A free shuttle service will be available from the hotels to the airport.
Airport information.

Surface Transport

We will meet you at the airport (by the large grizzly bear statue) and provide shuttle service to campus in 15-passenger vans. We will have vans for transport to and from the hotels, meals and campus throughout the workshop. The hotels also have a free shuttle service to get to and from the airport.

Traveling by car

From the west, take Interstate 90 to exit 305 onto North 19th Avenue and follow it south to Kagy Boulevard (approximately 3.5 miles). Turn left onto Kagy and continue to South 7th Avenue; turn left and continue to parking areas.

If you take exit 309 from the east onto Main Street, proceed west to Willson Avenue, turn left, and travel 18 blocks to Kagy Boulevard (Willson will curve slightly here). Turn right and continue for seven blocks to South 7th Avenue, turn right again, and you will see the parking lots on your left.

Parking

Parking on campus on weekends is free. For weekday parking, permits can be purchased for $2.50 per day on the corner of Grant St and 7th Ave. There is also a pay parking lot at the corner of Grant St. and 7th that is convenient for daily parking (no overnight parking).

Field Trips

Field work in Montana
Field trips will leave from the parking lot of the Grantree Inn at 8:00 AM on Friday September 16th, and 7:30 AM on Monday September 19th. The pre-meeting field trip to the Madison and Jefferson River valleys will cost $25 and will include tranportation, lunch and snacks. We will return to the hotel in time to get refreshed for the evening dinner and first workshop session. The post-meeting field trip to Yellowstone will cost $35 and will include transportation, lunch and snacks. We will stop in Livingston MT for dinner as we return to Bozeman. Pre-registration is mandatory for both trips.

Lodging

We have hotel rooms reserved at two Bozeman hotels. You will need to contact the hotels directly and make your own reservations. These rooms will be on hold until mid August, so please make your arrangements before then. If you wish to find a roomate, then check the workshop participant list to see who else will be coming. It is up to you to make your own connections with roomates.

Meals

The workshop will provide the following meals:
  • Friday night dinner
  • Saturday continental breakfast
  • Saturday lunch and breaks
  • Sunday continental breakfast
  • Sunday lunch and breaks

Saturday and Sunday night dinners will be out on the town in Bozeman and are not covered by the workshop.

All meals will include vegetarian offerings. Please provide information on the registration form if you require special meals. If you choose to eat other than the planned meals, you will be responsible for the costs.

Alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase during evening receptions and events.

What to wear

The dress code will be decidedly casual, but you should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. September in Montana is typically pleasant, but it's best to be prepared for a variety of conditions. Possible weather conditions range from chilly, wet and blustery (40 to 60 degrees), to mild (up to 80 degrees) and sunny.

Communications

The MSU Library has free wireless internet and public workstation computers. In order to use your laptop on the library wireless network, you'll need to bring your computer to the Information Technology Center (ITC) helpdesk to get a login code.

Cell phone service is usually good in and around Bozeman.
