Luis M Vicente

Dr. Luis M. Vicente is the Director and Associate Professor of the Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Department at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR). He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia in May 2009, during which time he authored or co-authored five publications in his area of research.
Dr. Vicente's career spans both industry and academia. From February 1990 to February 2003, he worked in the industry with notable organizations such as the Aerospace Division at SENER Group in Spain, Voyetra Inc. in New York, AG Software, and Siemens Corp. in Madrid. He joined PUPR in February 2003 as an Assistant Professor, where he later advanced to Associate Professor and Mentor of the Master Program in Electrical Engineering in 2009.
Dr. Vicente has held several key positions at PUPR. He served as the Sponsored Research Projects Coordinator from March 2011 to November 2012. In November 2012, he was promoted to Associate Director of the Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Department, a role he held until August 2020 when he became the Director of the department.
His research interests include beamforming, array processing, statistical signal processing, adaptive filters, high-performance computing in signal processing, and cybersecurity. Dr. Vicente has guided seventeen students to graduation as a graduate thesis advisor in areas such as digital signal processing, high-performance computing, and parallel and distributed processing. He is currently mentoring two doctoral students, further contributing to the academic and professional development of future leaders in engineering.

As Director of the ECECS Department at PUPR, Dr. Vicente oversees student admissions and mentoring, departmental administration, and the revision of online and hybrid courses. He ensures that these courses effectively utilize multimedia and internet resources to enhance the learning experience in engineering education. His leadership and dedication to academic excellence continue to inspire and support the next generation of engineers and computer scientists.
