Background Information

Peter Schuhmann teaches economics at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He earned his PhD in economics from North Carolina State University in 1996 with field concentrations in environmental economics and statistics.

Pete has taught six unique undergraduate courses, three graduate level courses and has supervised over 100 graduate and undergraduate independent studies and theses. He teaches traditional face-to-face courses, hybrid courses and fully online courses. Pete's primary areas of research are the economic valuation of coastal and marine resources and economic education. He has over 40 peer-reviewed publications, including work published in journals such as The Journal of Economic Education, Land Economics, Ecological Economics, Marine Resource Economics, and the Journal of Environmental Management. Along with Rob Burrus, Pete is co-organizer of an annual regional economics teaching workshop held in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

Pete has won a wide range of teaching awards including the Chancellor's Teaching Excellence Award, the Distinguished Teaching Professorship Award, the Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Award, and the MBA outstanding faculty award. Pete was elected by students to deliver the Keynote Address at UNCW's Freshman Convocation in 2009. In 2013, Pete was awarded the UNC system's Board of Governors Teaching Excellence Award, and was chosen as the 2014 recipient of the Kenneth G. Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award from the Southern Economic Association.

Related Pedagogical Projects

Pete has published 12 peer-reviewed journal articles or book chapters pertaining to pedagogy, learning or teaching. Along with Rob Burrus, he has organized a regional economics teaching conference, held each October in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. This conference has attracted participants across (and beyond) the southeast U.S. and has featured notable speakers including Ben Bernanke, John Taylor and Ken Elzinga. The workshop is entering its fourteenth year in 2014.

Pete's work on the valuation of coastal and marine resources has given him the opportunity to share his expertise during public lectures at the University of the West Indies and in consultations with various governmental and non-governmental agencies in the Caribbean, including the Caribbean Tourism Organization, the Barbados Ministry of Tourism, the Barbados Fisheries Division, and the Coastal Zone Management Unit. He also serves as thesis advisor for University of the West Indies graduate students.
