Background Information

I am in the second year as faculty at KCC, where I teach principles-level courses and advise the Economics and Business Club. I flipped all of my courses starting the Spring 2016 semester using a combination of publisher-produced videos and my own problem-based, collaborative in-class assignments. I strive to make my course material as relevant to students' experiences, perspectives, and interests as possible, using pop culture and integrating local issues.

My previous teaching experience was at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where (in addition to large principles-level classes) I lectured in my specialty of health economics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Most recently prior to KCC, I was the senior health economist at the only independent healthcare data & research organization in the state, where I researched healthcare policy and outcomes at the national and local levels. I hope to develop a new health economics course at KCC in collaboration with our state-leading nursing program.

I completed my PhD at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2011. Outside of campus, I like to spend time with my family and long-haired chihuahua, travel, find new restaurants, crossfit to compensate for the new food finds, and watch football, golf and baseball.

Related Pedagogical Projects

Starting this summer, I will be part of the first cohort of faculty to integrate `aina (land) -based learning into our pedagogy. As a Native Hawaiian-serving institution, this eventual campus-wide initiative promotes learning that is rooted in Native values, place-based research, and community engagement to understand community needs.
