Figure 3. As part of a larger study of the Lone Peak rock glacier, a section of the top talus mantle was excavated to locate the top of the ice surface within the rock glacier. The person in the hole is standing on the ice layer, which is about 3 m below the talus surface. The top of the hole was protected from sun and constant rockfall by a tarp.
