Figure 4. Rock glaciers can be difficult to identify when standing directly on them. The image at left is taken looking upslope on the rock glacier, while the right-image image looks downslope. It is, however, easy to identify the steep, rocky slopes that are the source of the rock glacier mantle talus. The Ski Tram Bottom Shack is also visible in the downslope-looking image; it is built on the toe of the rock glacier segment that is still active today. (Photo credit: Chad Jones, Big Sky Resort)
