Figure 1. This figure shows a digital elevation model (DEM) of eastern New York State. Elevation is interpreted by the colours. Blue is low elevation, red is high elevation. The inset map on the top right shows the location of the Mohawk Watershed (dark blue) within New York State. Schoharie Creek is one of the major tributaries to the Mohawk Watershed (indicated by the highlighted area on the DEM) which is in itself a tributary to the Hudson River (the major drainage shown on the DEM on right-hand side). The Mohawk flows between the Adirondack Mountains to the north and the Catskill Mountains to the south. Its two major tributaries reflect these two distinct portions of the watershed. Schoharie Creek drains the northern side of the Catskills (it flows north to the Mohawk), and the West Canada Creek drains the southwestern portion of the Adirondacks (it flows south to the Mohawk).
