Colors depict soil and rock surface temperatures in the morning and afternoon (warm colors = hot temperatures and cool colors = cool temperatures). It can be hypothesized that cracks might form perpendicular (i.e. north-south) to stresses that arise as a function of these changing temperature gradients throughout the day or during periods of cloud cover.
