Figure 4. Stratigraphic log of core taken in Coquille River estuary, southern Oregon coast USA, showing interlayered buried marsh soils (brown) and tidal mud (white). Each buried marsh soil documents coseismic subsidence that accompanied an earthquake on the Cascadia subduction zone. The sand beds immediately above the buried soils were deposited by tsunami that closely followed the earthquake. The buried soil at the bottom of the core is about 6,500 years old based on radiocarbon dating. Modified from Figure 5 of Witter et al. (2003).
