Figure 1. Typical view of the coastal salt marsh in coastal Oregon bordering a tidal slough. Note the abundance of great outcrops (just kidding!). The only way to investigate the sedimentary sequence is through coring. Coring is relatively easy because the sediment is soft and moist.
