Figure 4: Figure presenting the hydraulic environment over Big Eddy bench for increasing flow from below bench inundation to bankfull. Note the bench morphology prior to inundation (with artificial grass mats on the bench for sediment collection represented by black squares). Due to the persistence of the eddy over the range of discharges velocity over the bench remains commonly less than 0.1 m s-1 (darker blue shading) maintaining the highly effective environment for fine-grained sediment deposition. (note: velocity information has been removed from the main flow thread to improve the colour differential presented. The white area within the channel indicates velocities > 0.5 m s-1).
