Abrupt bend, Ovens River

Figure 2: The abrupt bend on the Ovens River in which Big Eddy bench is situated. A large hydraulic recirculating ‘eddy’ forms for a range of flows from bench inundation to bankfull flow and greater. The low velocity environment in the eddy is conducive to the deposition of silts and clays, as well as some fine-grained sand, which over decades combine to form the mature bench present today.
