Figure 7.1: This image shows engineering structures protecting the coastline. Foreground: The lower flat portion of the seawall is designed to induce wave breaking, while the sloped part allows for waves to run up the top, which is capped with the flat portion (where people are walking) for erosion from wave run-up. Background: nearly vertical seawall with curved crown with toe protection – this wall allows for broken waves to run up the wall, while the curved crown prevents excessive splashing from entering the top surface.
