Figure 2.9: Landsat satellite image of the Chesapeake Bay, a river valley that was formed by rivers extending and widening out onto the continental shelf when sea level was lower during the last Ice Age. As the ice sheets melted, global sea level rose, and river valleys such as this filled with water to create large bay and estuary systems.
