Notice from the larger lower image of the inset box indicated on the upper image that the drainage boundary represents a line across which river systems flow in opposite directions. The very high elevations of the western edge are associated with the Andes Mountains that extend along the west side of South America and are a result of tectonic uplift driven by subduction of oceanic crust below the South American continental crust.
