This 16-week online graduate course for elementary teachers is offered by colleges and universities across the United States as part of the NASA ESSEA Program (Earth System Science Education Alliance). The course engages primary school teachers in online collaborative activities emphasizing the use of hands-on activities. The goal is to lay an early foundation of Earth system science (ESS) knowledge upon which the students can build as they progress through their K-12 experiences. Course participants engage in:-building a virtual community with other K-4 teachers; working with their students in hands-on terrarium activities; and designing an ESS unit encompassing land, air, water, and living things, and maintaining an online portfolio of activities and group contributions.
