This video helps students see for themselves the problems of using a Mercator projection map to represent Antarctica. A brief overview covers the creation of this map projection in the 16th century, and its strengths and limitations. The short animation shows how mapmakers transform the round Earth into a Mercator projection, highlighting the way the map distorts Antarctica.
