United States Geological Survey (USGS)

This dataset, available on CD-ROM, features remotely sensed images of polar sea-ice concentration with elevation and bathymetry. It is intended for paleoclimate research, specifically for estimations of average seasonal variation in sea-ice concentration in the modern polar oceans, and ultimately, to constrain general circulation models of climate change. The dataset, produced by by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), was derived from the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) and Special Sensor Microwave/ Imager (SSM/I) instruments flown aboard the Nimbus-7 satellite. Metadata includes identification, data quality, spatial data organization, spatial reference, entity and attribute, distribution, technical requirements, and reference information.
