The Thermal Modeling and Analysis Project (TMAP) at PMEL carries out ocean model experiments, using a state-of-the-art ocean circulation model developed at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. The goal of the project is to try to understand how atmospheric forcing causes the ocean to behave during "normal" and "unusual" conditions in the tropical Pacific. This site provides some background about the ocean circulation in the tropical Pacific and some animations of model results for 1982-1983 to illustrate the kinds of oceanic changes that can take place during ENSO periods. Animations include the surface of the tropical Pacific, showing the sea surface temperature field and the surface horizontal currents; an equatorial section extending across the Pacific and from the surface down to 250m depth; and north-south sections along 140W and 110W longitude, extending from 10S to 10N latitude. This is an excellent resource for animations modeling the behavior of the tropical Pacific Ocean during a major El Nino event.
