A 1,400-year simulation replicating the observed pattern and amplitude of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) was examined to determine whether the AMO really is oscillatory. Results imply that the AMO is a genuine quasi-periodic cycle, related to the variability in the oceanic thermohaline circulation (THC). Implications of AMO-induced changes to THC are discussed.
