This CNN news article discusses the discovery of a new class of hydrothermal vents in the mid-Atlantic Ocean, called the Lost City, formed by heat generated when seawater reacts with mantle rocks rather than by volcanic activity. The article also notes the importance of the discovery to microbiologists, as some of these new vents were inhabited by single-cell organisms called thermophiles.
