Paul M. Barlow, USGS

This USGS Circular describes the occurrence and flow of freshwater and saltwater in groundwater systems of the Atlantic coastal zone; reviews the causes, modes, and management of saltwater intrusion along the Atlantic coast; and illustrates some of the mechanisms of groundwater discharge and contaminant loading to coastal ecosystems. The Circular also illustrates traditional approaches for monitoring and managing saltwater intrusion and highlights some of the innovative approaches being used to enhance the sustainability of coastal groundwater resources, such as desalination and aquifer storage and recovery systems.
