This scientific paper reports the discovery of two novel species of a genus of thermophilic, heterotrophic, aerobic archaea that grow under extremely acidic conditions. These species were isolated from two different solfataric locations in northern Japan. Morphology and physiological properties are described, accompanied by electon and phase contrast micrographs. The phylogenetic position of these species was determined by PCR amplification, cloning, and sequencing of 16s rRNA.
