The Quaternary Glacio-Fluvial History of the Upper Midwest Using Anaglyph Stereo Maps part of NAGT:Teaching Resources:Teaching Materials Collection
Students examine the anaglyph stereo map (with red/cyan glasses) and use textures to generate a surficial geology map of the Upper Midwest. They can then interpret the textures in terms of landforms, geomorphic features, and earth-surface processes, as well as evaluate evidence for the relative age of the large-scale features.
Modeling Sea Level: Lateral and Vertical Facies Changes part of NAGT:Teaching Resources:Teaching Materials Collection
Participants will use a tube and bead (or ball) model to visualize and predict how changes in sea level can control the lateral and vertical facies distribution within and adjacent to a marine sedimentary basin. They will also critique the model and identify shortcomings and assumptions involved in the model. Participants will use their knowledge to draw a sea-level curve for Paleozoic rocks of the Central Midwest.
Revisiting nearby outcrops to build depth in understanding: A technique for building transferable field observation and interpretation skills part of Cutting Edge:Geoscience in the Field:Field Experiences:Posters
Field trips in introductory-level geology classes revisit the same outcrop to emphasize newly-learned concepts, build depth in understanding, and address student misconceptions.
