Learning Goals

Students will be able to identify a process as endothermic or exothermic based on the reaction in class and definitions in the textbook.

Context for Use

This is a 50 minute lab where students will run two experiments and identify the process as endothermic or exothermic. They will then answer questions relating to these processes and attempt to identify some other processes. This lab could be adapted to include chemical formulas and energy arguments.

Description and Teaching Materials

Students will mix sulfuric acid and water, and ammonium nitrate and water. They will measure the temperature changes and decide what sort of process is taking place.

Teaching Notes and Tips

Students should be warned of the risks of spilling acid and using ammonia. Also proper disposal techniques should be mentioned. Safety glasses must be used as well as lab aprons.

Assessment

Students will be assessed based on their answers to the worksheet.
