Well I am late as always.
What I did was download only earthquakes from south america post 1998 as good depth data began then. I saved the data as a CSV (msdos) file in excell which solved the importing into arc-view problem. I then used the quesry option to create smaller sets of earthquake seperated by depth, saving each set as a new file, then i plotted these depth sewts in different colors. I have posted two screenshots, one an overview and one a close up.
The data shows the deeping trend of earthquakes under south america as well as a coulpe of areas witrh relatively frew earthques. A odd zone of very deep earethquakes occurs under the altiplano.
