EET Workshops Implementation

Use this template to share the results of how you have incorporated the techniques of an EET chapter into your teaching. Let us know how you used the EET in the classroom by describing the projects and activities that you carried out with your students. In addition to this template, post a PowerPoint presentation or a text file with screen shots to document your results.

Name: Laura Amatulli

Position and school:
6th grade Avondale Meadows

Title of the EET Chapter on which you based your Project or Activity:
Jules Verne Map Making

Dataset Used: Moon Maps

Tool Used: Jules Verne Maps

Project/Activity Question(s):
· What will it take to build a Lunar Plant Growth Chamber and where will we put it??

Project/Activity Goal(s):
To get students to reflect on a Pioneer Plant community.
To use technology, inserting maps into a presentation.
To problem solve about future scientific problems that may occur.

Brief Description of the Project/Activity (What did students do?):
We just completed Biological Succession in our life science class. We had a wide knowledge of ecological succession from pioneer communities to climax communities. I like to make space connections to keep students motivated and keyed in on the future. I wanted to see if students could create Pioneer Plant Communities on the moon.
Students are introduced to the Lunar Plant Growth Chamber Activity of NASA.
They watched the trailer We Are Going Back. About their generation returning to the moon. Students complete KWL charts on the moon and a venn diagram comparing the moon and earth.

We read several articles about the return to the moon. The harvesting of H3 or helium 3 as an alternative fuel was interesting. Students were very precise about their colonies and how they were to be created. Students then wrote letters from the moon.
See example

Number of Students (With how many students did you carry out the project/activity?):
60 students from 2 classes

Time Spent on the Project/Activity (How many hours or class periods did the project/activity take?):
Approximately 3 class periods of activity and one online with Jules Verne

Your Reflections on the Project/Activity:

· How do you feel the project/activity went with students?
I feel that students will be able to use this tool for a lifetime. They were very excited to
Go to the lab and look up close at where there project may be constructed.

· What sorts of questions did student ask? What insights did they have? How proficient are students in using the dataset and/or tool of the EET chapter?
Where on the moon does it get the most sunlight? Where might ice be found on the moon?
Could we get geologic maps of the moon and interpret the data?

· How will you carry out this project/activity differently in the future?
I will use this project again in the future. Possibly adding Jules Verne activities as homework. I would also like to offer a teacher workshop using the Jules Verne site. Many opportunities are available using this tool.

In addition to this template, please post a PowerPoint presentation or a text document with screen shots to document your results. Include examples of representative student work (without names) and any handouts or introductory materials you may have provided to accompany the project/activity.
