Ozone comparisons

The students have been comparing and contrasting the depleted ozone layers and brainstorming what could have caused the depletions in the short time span.

We worked through the EET Chapter, Analyzing the Antarctic Ozone Hole for one class period. Our wireless laptops were to slow so most of the work was done on one computer. For the next class period, the students searched for possible reason for the depletion. The final day was spent in discuss--each had to verify what and why they thought this is occurring. This was the interesting part, each verifying what they feel is occurring.

In working with a special section of earth science students (7 students), the students ran through the ImageJ with the analyzing the Antarctic Ozone Hole. The students were able to move through the site rather easily and enjoyed the stacked process.
After googling for ozone depletion, the class held a discussion on how come the ozone is depleting. It was interesting for them to realize that man kind is one of the major causes for the depletion. Volcanic eruptions were another cause for the depletion. The chlorofluorocarbons and hydro chlorofluorocarbons (emissions of halogen source gases) were the major factors in depleting the ozone layer in the stratosphere. The point that these accumulations are occurring at the poles was due to the low temperatures there which allowed for polar stratospheric clouds to form.
With the reduction of the halogen type gases being used in refrigeration and fire extinguishers, the class could not relate how the ozone hole was increasing but the use of the halogen gases was decreasing. The class resolved that this is one of the things in nature which will fix itself. (If this is true or not—the class believes it will)
