Lesson Plan for eet

Done with 7th grade students:

Students were working with partners on this project due to lack of enough computers.

I had the computer tech in our school bookmark the EET site on all the computers in the lab.

I walked the students through…

- click on “Creating custom Maps of Earth and other worlds”
- Read the Case Study – “Where in the World” together
- We read the Step by step instructions
- examine maps created by voyager
- create maps of specific locations
- explore data available
- save a map image
- From part 1 – (look at maps) – We clicked on the Jules Verne Voyage link to look at different maps. (Students could also click on this site from the Tools and Data option.)

- Read through the Create maps page.
- we experimented with a few places, etc.
- Then each group was instructed to choose one area (in any world), and create a map using the Jules Verne Voyager site.
- They had to write a short paragraph telling us which place they chose and why. As well as what the map showed.
- They finished by printing the map (after saving it to a file)
- Turned in both the map and the paragraph.
- Shared with class.

I did this with 7th grade regular ed. Students. They had a lot of fun with it! At first, they were really exploring, unafraid of anything. That was good because after a while I told them they had an assignment, and they stopped perusing and got right to business. I think that if I would have told them about the assignment right away, they would not have explored so much. The maps and paragraphs were “ok”…they knew they were not getting graded on this, so maybe they did not put as much thought and effort into it. (That is what their teacher thought) I had asked another teacher if I could do this with her class as a favor. After the completion, I think my special education students might have been able to do some of it…of course not all of them, but the majority might have been ok.
**One last note …The students had a better/easier time saving the map than I did! I got it, since I did it beforehand I had some clue, but they were much faster than I!
