Use of Mapping Site

Shortly after the January 18th session I had my five sections of Earth Science in the computer lab. The primarily freshmen audience was working on a lab assignment on bacis plate tectonics. I offered the students an extra credit assignment to explore this site. I walked them through accessing the site but left them to figure out how to use it. The assignment required they print a map they had created and give a short reflection on use of the site and any difficulties they encountered.
Although they clamor for extra credit, when it requires work or thought many (most) pass it by, I had about 10 of my 130 students actually use the site. They encountered few difficulties in using the site and enjoyed the graphics. The one problem that seemed to crop up most often was the rubber band box placement. I think that would have been alievated with more practice on the site.

I plan on using some of the maps I looked at next year when I revise my powerpoints.
