Graphing in Excel

Did anyone have multiple years appear in the column headings which caused the graphing to appear as a single line? Solutions? Thank you.

I didnt have the problem, but today my student had the problem. We solved the problem by sorting out the labels in columns A and B. Our first row was year and we left A and B blank. The second and third rows were labelled CAppt and AZppt. The data was graphed and worked well.
I have tried this work with three seniors, two juniors, one sophomore and one freshman. There were many "ah wow" and "isnt that neat" expressions.

Hi Dwight,
I'm not sure what you mean by multiple years in the column header. The year headers should be 2000, 2001, 2001, etc. I will try to attach a screen grab of what the first 20 rows and first 8 or so columns of the data file from EOS-WEBSTER looks like when it first is loaded (aas a .txt file) into Excel. This is precip in MN.

Chris,
Nice to hear that you got your graph with your students. Excel does like to have headers right above the columns, and rows labeled, and then it can make the graph look very nice. If you just hightlight the two rows you want to graph, it may just number the x-axis 1-100, but it depends on your choice of graph type. Try different things. You can click on an axis or data point and further format your graph or your data marker/line color - change colors, stretch the graph, set different intervals for tic marks, have the computer determine a least squares line fit. (called trendline in Excel) Ask questions here if you run into problems.
