Summary

In this small group activity, students will use their sense of hearing to determine which set of film containers sounds the same and contains the same substance. Students will match their containers and self check their answers.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to use their sense of hearing to figure out which film containers sound the same and contain the same substance.

Key concepts- Students will decide what sense they will need to use in order to successfully complete this activity. Students will learn that their sense of hearing is a good tool to use when they can't see, taste, smell, or touch something.
Vocabulary words- hearing and sense(s)

Context for Use

Kindergarten student activity. Small group activity of 3-4 students. Approximate time needed- 10 minutes. Equipment needed- matching film containers with the same substances. Substance ideas to fill the film containers with: cotton, water, popcorn, kernels, salt, bells. Various small colored stickers that will stick to the bottom of the film containers. Students should already be familiar with their 5 senses before completing this activity. You could easily adapt this activity for use in other settings.

Description and Teaching Materials

The teacher will explain this activity in a large group setting. The teacher will show the class where the film containers are in the room i.e. table or floor space area. Students will be shown how to properly shake the film containers. The teacher needs to tell the students that they are not to open the containers during this activity. Ask the students if they know what sense they will be using in order to complete this activity? Explain to the students that their job is to explore the film containers by shaking them. Determine what film containers sound the same and contain the same substances. After students have made that determination they can self check their answers. They should turn the film containers over to see if they have matching color coded stickers. If the two stickers match, then they know they have found the right match. If the stickers do not match, they need to explore more and find another container that sounds the same.

As a closing/extension activity, send home a note with families asking them to help their child fill the two empty film containers coming home with the same substance. The child will return the film containers to school and other students will shake the film containers and try and guess what is inside. This is a good way to promote family involvement and allow students to choose their own substance.

Teaching Notes and Tips

Ask film developing centers for left over film containers. You can make this activity more challenging by filling more film containers with various substances. Remind students not to open the film containers at anytime during the activity.

Assessment

Students will self assess their own work. They will check the bottom of their film containers to see if the stickers match, therefore indicating they have found the correct match. As a teacher I will monitor the small group activity going on to make sure students are on task and answer any questions if needed.

Standards

K- IV. Life Science G. Human Organism -The students will understand that people have 5 senses that can used to learn about the environment
